Résumé

Whether you are new to this popular Microsoft Web browser or a longtime veteran who wants to take advantage of the latest features, this friendly guide has the answers. Hands-on tips make going online, getting around, customizing the browser, and sending and receiving e-mail a cinch!

Inside this book are ample chapters arranged into seven parts. Each chapter is broken down into sections that cover various aspects of the chapter's main subject. The chapters have a logical sequence, so reading them in order makes sense (if you're crazy enough to read this entire book). But you don't have to read them that way. You can flip open the book to any page and start reading.

The following sections give you the lowdown on what's in each of the seven parts.

Part I - Preparing for an Internet Exploration
The two chapters; in this part deal with really introductory stuff: what the Internet is and how to get connected to it. Part I is the place to start if you haven't visited the Internet before and you're not sure what the World Wide Web is, what www. microsoft.com means, or how to connect your computer to the Internet.

Part II - Embarking on a World Wide Web Adventure
This part is the heart and soul of the book. Its chapters show you how to use the basic features of Internet Explorer to untangle the World Wide Web. You find out how to surf the Web like a pro using the Internet Explorer 5.5 Web browsing features, how to look up information on the Web, how to build a library of your favorite Web sites so that you don't always have to hunt them down, and how to get help when you're stuck. You can also read about setting up your computer to download the Web pages you're most interested in while you sleep by using offline synchronization.

Part III - Getting Connected with Outlook Express
The chapters in this part show you how to use Outlook Express, the e-mail program that comes with Internet Explorer. With Outlook Express, you can send and receive e-mail, set up an address book, and participate in Internet newsgroups. You also find out how to use MSN Messenger, Microsoft's instant message program that lets you talk online with your friends.

Part IV - Customizing Your Explorations
The four chapters in this part show you how to configure Internet Explorer by tweaking its options so that it suits your working style. This stuff is best read by people who like to show their computers who's the boss.

Part V - Grow Your Own Web Pages
If you're someone who enjoys creating your own Web pages, check out the five chapters in this part. Here, you find out how to create your own Web pages using Microsoft FrontPage Express, which you can download for free from the Internet or which may already be on your computer. Then you find out how to post your HTML documents to a Web site using the new Web Publishing Wizard. And for the technically inclined, you learn how to incorporate the new Dynamic HTML features into your Web pages.

Part VI - The Part of Tens
This wouldn't be a For Dummies book if it didn't include a collection of chapters with lists of interesting snippets: Ten Tips for Using Internet Explorer Efficiently, Ten Things That Sometimes Go Wrong, and so on.

Glossary
People use so much techno-babble when they discuss the Internet that I decided to include an extensive glossary of online terms, free of charge. With this glossary in hand, you can beat the silicon-heads at their own game.
