Résumé

Whether you want to run Linux on a desktop or a notebook, as a client or as a server (even as a dual-boot system with Windows!), Richard Petersen's Linux: The Complete Reference, Third Edition makes it a snap. Complete with its own easy-to-install full editions of Red Hat Linux 6.0 and Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 on dual CD-ROMs, this plain-English Linux startup kit takes you from installation through networking and programming mastery in a single primer grounding you in all of Linux's essential components, capabilities, commands, and bundled applications.

You'll take charge of:

  • Installation as a workstation, server, or dual-boot system
  • The KDE and GNOME desktop environments plus shell operations, feature, and configurations
  • File, system, network, X-Window, proxy, and related systems administration tasks
  • Setup and configuration as a Web, mail, news, or FTP server
  • Internet mailers, newsreaders, browsers and other tools
  • Office, database, desktop, editor, and other applications
  • Programming the shell plus working with compilers, libraries, Perl, Tcl/Tk, Expect and other development resources
  • Much more!
