A serious set of tutorials explaining how multimedia brings together existing products such as the PC, telephone, and television in ways that make current video games really kid stuff. Heath bases his material on development and research done at Motorola, starting with the fundamentals of digital audio and video, compression techniques such as JPEG and MPEG, and delivery systems such as CD, telephones, local area networks, ATM, and ADS. The conclusion collates this information describing key applications in video conferencing, video phones, conference systems, digital television through satellite and cable, new services such as video on demand and interactive television, and new PC interfaces like TAPI and TSPI.
