This book is for people who use a computer to interael with
the real world. This includes a collection of interfacing
experiments using a PC and its Centronic, RS232 and Game
ports. Hardware design and programming aspects of these I/O
ports are examined and explained. A huge range of
applications are considered, turning the PC into a flexible
core of a variety of systems. As well as describing the
ports, a wide range of tools are introduced, and simple
ways of expanding the ports are given. Complete circuit
diagrams and software listings are included. Use your PC to
drive relays, LEDs, DC motors, stepper motors, message
display modules, mains operated devices and many more. Or
use your PC to monitor and analyse the outside world:
topics include analog-to-digital converters,
voltage-to-frequency converters and various sensors with
digital outputs. Experimental circuits are provided which
enable a PC to monitor variables such as temperature, flow
rate, light intensity and magnetic field.
