Résumé

Professional NT Services has three main aims. First, it teaches developers how to design and implement good NT services using all the features and tools supplied for the purpose by Microsoft Visual C++. The book describes how services work, what work they are best equipped to do, and how they fit in with other system components. In its pages, the author develops a set of generic classes to facilitate service development, and introduces the concept of usage patterns - a way of categorizing the roles that services can fulfil in the overall architecture of a system.

Second, the book gives developers a firm grounding in the security and configuration issues that must be taken into account when developing a service. A chapter is given over to describing NT security, while hints and tips about COM security and thread safety are provided whenever they are relevant to the topic at hand. On the configuration front, there is information on when and how properly to use the NT event log, and full details of how to build Control Panel applets and MMC snap-ins that interact with your services.

Third, the author presents sample implementations of the usage patterns that have been identified. The example projects variously use MSMQ, COM, ATL, and the service classes that were created earlier in the book whenever they are appropriate to the problem being considered, and may be examined or customized to help with the development of the reader's own services. Finally, one of the services so created is used to illustrate a discussion of how to profile, tune and debug NT services.

To date, the treatment of NT services has been sketchy and widely scattered. This book is aimed at bringing the range of relevant material together in an organized way. Its target readership is C/C++ Windows programmers with experience of programming under Win32 and basic knowledge of multithreaded and COM programming. At an architectural level, the book's development of usage patterns will be invaluable to client-server developers who want to include services as part of a multi-tiered system.
