Résumé

We are at the dawn of an Internet era. It's a time of excitement and confusion, opportunities and risks. No one is certain of what's happening now, what's coming next. Is this a technological breakthrough as important as the development of electricity, the telephone network or the railroad' Or is it comparable to the invention of the transistor and the integrated circuit? Clearly the Internet is at the crossroads of different new technologies but it is mainly an innovative process opening the way to a multiplication of new services. In the industrial sector, we usually start with the product and then move to the most suitable production process. In the service sector, it's often the new process, in this case the new network, that will lead to new services and products.

How far will this Internet wave go? In which direction' No one really knows, but out of this "primordial technological swamp" new companies, new business relationships, new corporate structures are emerging. We know that it will affect our lives. All managers-and organizations are concerned. Startups are sprouting up all over and they capture our imagination. The more we develop services and professional organizations, the more we become a learning economy and the more we have to develop according to a lemming mode. Better things, better ideas, better solutions will appear in the future but we have to go along with the learning curve. The innovation process is neither sequential or orderly, nor is it a matter of random trial and error. We have to learn while going with the flow.

If you don't understand what is going on at stage one, you will find stage two more difficult to embrace. If you miss mark one, it could be more difficult to target mark two. You should not wait too long to get started. Two steps forward, one step backward is acceptable as long as you get started. You have to learn to manoeuvre during the journey, but you cannot control the flow.

Thus I encourage you to read this book and take in as much as possible. It will give you hands-on guidance and show where technology meets value. It will give you an overview of the actual technology and guide you to meet value by focusing on the "three C"s: Customers, Competition and your own Capabilities.

It will give you examples of emerging best practices and embrace the whole value chain, from business to business applications, to e-commerce. The supply chain is the backbone of service opportunities: enlarging the customer base and boosting world trade, providing economies of scope, adjusting supply and demand, enhancing efficiency, effectiveness and flexibility of different players in the chain. This book will help you to understand present limitations, and where a new technology may lift a constraint and introduce a different route. So don't hesitate to plunge into the book and go with the flow. I wish you good luck and even more importantly consistent luck in your eVenture adventure.
