The Sweet Molecules of Life

Robert Stick

400 pages, parution le 11/01/2002

Résumé

Carbohydrates: The Sweet Molecules of Life delivers up-to-date coverage of all aspects of carbohydrate chemistry. It begins with a lively introduction, interspersed with historical material, and then brings the reader up to speed on the 'nuts and bolts' of carbohydrates, including configuration, conformation and the anomeric effects. Subsequent chapters describe the various protecting groups that enable the many selective transformations within monosaccharides and the multitude of approaches to the synthesis of the glycosidic linkage. The book also provides an introductory treatment of higher saccharides, glycoconjugates and glycobiology and carbohydrate-based vaccines. An appendix gives a very useful summary of the available literature sources.

Carbohydrates is an excellent text for advanced undergraduates and graduates studying carbohydrates. It is also an invaluable reference for researchers, teaching faculty and new entrants into the field.
