It was in 1936 that the young Brother Basil of the Saint Panteleimon monastery on Mount Athos, made a name for himself in the scientific community when he published 'The Ascetic and Theological Doctrine of Saint Gregory Palamas', the first in a long series of articles and extensive research. After making studies of Gregory of Nyssa, Basil the Great and so many others, Brother Basil, now Mgr Krivochéine, edited the 'Catechetics' of Saint Symeon the New Theologian in the 'Sources chrétiennes' collection, followed by a fundamental biography of the Byzantine mystic. At a time when we had scarcely begun to rediscover the treasures of the Fathers of the Church, he took advantage of the exceptional collection put at his disposal by the 'monastic republic'. The present volume groups together the bulk of the pastristic and spiritual studies of the 'ideal, cultivated bishop' (the expression coined by Alexandre Schmemann), about whom one could say that the 'true homeland, here on earth, was the faith of the Fathers'...
