La réforme liturgique du métropolite cyprien de kiev

La présente étude est consacrée à l'une des phases essentielles de la « synthèse byzantine » : la réforme liturgique associée au nom de Cyprien Tsamblak, né vers 1330 dans la région de Trnovo (Bulgarie), disciple du patriarche de Constantinople Philothée Kokkinos. Étroitement lié à cette grande figure de l'hésychasme byzantin du XIVe siècle, Cyprien fit un séjour à l'Athos où il fut ainsi initié à l'enseignement des moines hésychastes. Il devint par la suite métropolite de Kiev et de Lituanie (en 1375), avant d'être définitivement intronisé métropolite de Kiev et de toutes les Russies, siège qu'il occupa à deux reprises de 1381 à 1382, puis de 1390 jusqu'à sa mort en 1406. Imitant son maître Philothée qui avait canonisé l'ordo néo-sabaïte à l'origine de l'actuel rite byzantin, Cyprien entreprit une grande réforme liturgique en Russie à la fin du XIVe siècle. Jusqu'alors, deux Typika étaient en usage : le Typikon de la Grande Église de Constantinople dans les cathédrales et les églises paroissiales, et le Typikon du patriarche Alexis le Stoudite, observé dans les monastères. Cyprien s'efforça d'uniformiser la liturgie en opérant une grande synthèse consistant en l'introduction d'un seul et unique typikon néo-sabaïte observé à la fois dans les monastères et les églises séculières. En plus de raconter dans le détail les particularités de la réforme liturgique du métropolite Cyprien, ce livre évoque aussi l'ambiance historico-culturelle, et par-dessus tout spirituelle, du mouvement hésychaste de l'époque, pressentant les caractéristiques essentielles du métropolite-liturgiste, découvrant ses motifs, démontrant de manière convaincante que son but n'était pas tant une réforme qu'une restauration : un retour à la tradition patristique et monastique dans le contexte du renouveau hésychaste. Cela résume à la fois la manière dont la liturgie byzantine s'est développée et les problèmes ultérieurs qu'ont posés ses sources existantes non seulement aux liturgistes d'autrefois mais aussi aux chercheurs d'aujourd'hui.

This study is devoted to one of the essential phases of the 'Byzantine Synthesis': the liturgical reform associated with Cyprien Tsamblak, born in 1330 in the Trnovo region (Bulgaria), a disciple of the Patriarch of Constantinople, Philotheus Kokkinos. Closely linked to this great figure of Byzantine Hesychasm of the 14th century, Cyprien stayed in Athos where he was initiated to the teaching of hesychastic monks. He later became Metropolitan of Kiev and Lithuania (in 1375), before being appointed Metropolitan of Kiev and all Russia, a position he occupied twice: between 1381 and 1382, then from 1390 to his death in 1406. In imitation of his master Philotheus, who had canonized the neo-Sabaite ordo - the origin of today's Byzantine rite - Cyprian undertook a great liturgical reform in Russia at the end of the 14th century. Until then, two Typika had been in use: the Typikon of the Great Church of Constantinople in cathedrals and parish churches, and the Typikon of the patriarch Alexius Studites, observed in monasteries. Cyprian sought to unite the liturgy by imposing a great synthesis, comprising the introduction of a unique neo-Sabaite typikon that was observed in both monasteries and secular churches. As well as giving a detailed account of Metropolitan Cyprian's liturgical reform, this book evokes the historical, cultural and above all spiritual environment of the hesychastic movement, announcing the essential characteristics of the metropolitan-liturgist, revealing his motivation, providing a convincing demonstration that his aim was not so much reform as restoration: a return to the patristic and monastic tradition in the context of hesychastic revival. All of which provides a summary of how Byzantine liturgy developed and the later problems posed by existing sources, not only for the liturgists of yore but also for researchers today.
