Résumé
À l'occasion de la publication aux Éditions du Cerf, en 2010, du « Dictionnaire des évêques de France au XXe siècle », l'équipe « Religions, sociétés et acculturation » du Laboratoire de recherche historique Rhône-Alpes a organisé un colloque qui s'est tenu à l'université de Lyon en novembre 2010. En procédant à une évaluation des matériaux réunis dans cet instrument de travail, les axes principaux de recherche sur l'épiscopat du XXe siècle ont été identifiés. La première partie propose un bilan du « Dictionnaire » centré sur la notion de « générations épiscopales » et confronté aux approches conduites dans deux autres pays, l'Allemagne et l'Espagne. La deuxième partie s'attache au parcours des évêques, aux facteurs qui les préparent à leur rôle, au style qu'ils adoptent, à leur dimension intellectuelle et spirituelle et aux réactions qu'ils suscitent. La troisième partie s'intéresse à leur gestion au quotidien des grands projets immobiliers, aux choix politiques ou pastoraux en passant par la question de leurs collaborateurs et de leur emploi du temps. La quatrième partie enfin s'interroge, en lien avec les mutations ecclésiologiques, sur les structures de concertation développées au cours du siècle et les logiques collectives qu'elles permettent dans l'espace public. Ainsi se dessinent les lignes de force de l'étude d'un corps qui constitue sans aucun doute, malgré les mutations et les contestations, une élite pour l'Église catholique et la société française.

On the occasion of the publication in 2010, by Éditions du Cerf, of the Dictionnaire des évêques de France au XXe siècle, the 'Religions, sociétés et acculturation' team of the 'Laboratoire de recherche historique Rhône-Alpes' organised a colloquium which took place at the University of Lyon in November 2010. During an evaluation of the material assembled for that working event, the major axes of research on 20th century episcopacy were defined. The first part offers a summary of the Dictionnaire focusing on the notion of 'episcopal generations' and comparing with approaches in two other countries, Germany and Spain. The second part follows the careers of bishops, from the things that prepare them to fulfil their role to the style they adopt, their intellectual and spiritual dimension and the reactions they inspire. Part three examines the daily management of property, political or pastoral choices, including their collaborators and their timetable. Part four explores, in relation to ecclesiological mutations, structures developed for dialogue during the century and the collective action they permit in public life. In this way, we present the strong lines of this study of a corpus which undoubtedly constitutes - in spite of mutations and contestations - an élite for the Catholic Church and French society.
