"This book is the echo of a colloquium which took place on 4-5 May, 2009 in Paris, on the initiative of the 'Groupe épiscopal d'accompagnement du Renouveau charismatique', which received a mission from the Assembly of Bishops: to reflect on the Charismatic revival and its two components, prayer groups and communities. Its intention is to appease diverse realities and ensure that Pentecostal grace is given its just place in the Church. Over the last few years, we have observed a new charismatic revival called the 'Third Wave' or the 'Glory Movement'. This new development is celebrated especially in large meetings which take place in a highly emotional atmosphere, with phenomena such as healings, 'repose in the Spirit', spasms, laughter... The Scriptures are proclaimed by various orators, Catholic, Protestant, Evangelical... At the beginning, it attracted mostly young people now, all age groups are represented. We hear diverse reports: from enthusiasts who give a positive account to the most sceptical who are troubled by the experience. All of which creates tensions in prayer groups or communities. We cannot simply turn a blind eye to this reality that is why we formed a team to make a closer analysis. We selected people from different disciplines: history, religious anthropology, psychology, theology and pastoral. The group worked on the project for more than two years. We wanted to share the fruits of our work with those who responded to our invitation: bishops, diocesan delegates, members of the charismatic movement and those responsible for communities. We also wanted it to be available to those with pastoral duties whose mission is a difficult and complex one: to educate faith and promote authentic Christian maturity, to construct the ecclesial communion, to protect freedom and be attentive to the weak, to encourage charismatic phenomena while applying their 'judgement of the authenticity and correct use of these gifts"(Vatican II, Decree on the Lay Apostolate, n° 3), and finally to respond definitively to Paul's instruction: 'Do not quench the Spirit. Do not despise prophecies, but test everything hold fast what is good.' (1 Th 5, 19-21)." [From the introduction by Mgr Boishu]"
