Pagina sacra

L'Écriture doit être « l'âme de la théologie », répète-t-on volontiers depuis le XIXe siècle, comme pour prévenir les théologiens de s'égarer loin de la Bible dans des abstractions ou des systèmes trop humains. Or il y eut une époque où l'Écriture était non seulement l'âme, mais la chair de la théologie. Une époque où les théologiens empruntaient à la Bible non seulement des idées, mais encore un langage et une poétique, au point que les deux, Écriture et théologie, étaient appelées du même nom : « Pagina sacra », « page sacrée ». Cette époque fut aussi celle où la théologie se constitua comme « science », s'ouvrant grand aux lumières de la raison. Alors vivaient des saints de l'intelligence tels Bonaventure, le franciscain ou Thomas d'Aquin, le dominicain. De leurs lectures des Écritures ont jailli des milliers de pages écrites sur Dieu, aussi audacieuses que des cathédrales, aussi chatoyantes que des rosaces gothiques. En dialogue avec cette époque, cet ouvrage propose de retrouver le secret de la continuité entre écriture humaine et poétique divine qui a produit tant de chefs-d'oeuvre dans certaines pratiques oubliées : le Livre, le Crucifix et l'Eucharistie. D'une lecture de la Bible conjuguant foi et critique, aux esthétiques de l'adoration du Crucifix et de la communion eucharistique, « Pagina sacra » contemple le Verbe divin qui se noue à la voix humaine pour la rendre capable de dire Dieu. Exégèses contemporaine et médiévale, histoires de l'art et de la culture, littérature, théorie littéraire et théologie spéculative sont ici mises en oeuvre pour retrouver « la clé du festin ancien » dont nous sommes tous en quête depuis Rimbaud.

Since the 19th century, we have been content to reiterate how Scripture must be 'the soul of theology', as if to warn theologians against wandering away from the Bible into abstractions or systems that are too human. But there was a time when Scripture was not just the soul, but also the body of theology. A time when theologians derived not only ideas from the Bible, but also a language and poetics, to the point where both Scripture and theology were referred to by the same name: 'Pagina sacra', sacred page. This was also the time when theology constituted a 'science', warmly embracing the light of reason. At that period lived saints with the intelligence of the Franciscan Bonaventure, or the Dominican Thomas Aquinas. From their readings of the Scriptures flowed thousands of written pages about God, as daring as cathedrals, as shimmering as Gothic rose windows. Dialoguing with this period, this volume sets out to rediscover the secret of the continuity between human writing and Divine poetics which produced so many masterpieces in certain forgotten practices: the Book, the Crucifix and the Eucharist. From a reading of the Bible combining faith and criticism, to the aesthetics of the adoration of the Crucifix and Eucharistic Communion, 'Pagina sacra' contemplates the Divine Word which joins with the human voice, transmitting the capability to enunciate God. Contemporary and medieval exegeses, the histories of art and culture, literature, literary theory and speculative theology are here brought into play in order to find 'the key to the feast of old', which we have all been seeking since Rimbaud.
