"Father Liégé was a very polite listener. Under that red hair, his eyes shone with a certain glee behind a pair of intellectual's spectacles. In the fervent discussions of those times, he never refused to discuss a hypothesis. With him, there always came a point at which you encountered a firmness, faith in transcendence, in the Word and in the Church. We had the impression it was firmness in the doctrine which, added to his great knowledge, human friendship and sense of freedom of thought, produced a very attractive blend." These are Georges Hourdin's words. Professor Gérard Reynal unveils the remarkable personality of the man who was Father Liégé: a Dominican educated in the faculty of theology at Saulchoir at the school of Fathers Chenu and Congar, who were his masters. It was in 1946, when the war was over, that he began to teach theology. But how did he become the thinker whose original theology was to leave its mark on generations? To answer that question, we must follow him in his reflections and reactions to events: from the post-war "revival" to the Vatican II Council and its posterity, taking in the creation of the "Parole et Mission" review and the foundation of the ISPC in the Institut catholique de Paris. Very soon, Father Liégé became involved in debates that heralded a new understanding of the Church, its relation to the world and its missionary vocation. At the same time, his experience educating the young "Scouts-Routiers" confirmed his apostolic vocation and brought out an exceptional personality that showed clairvoyance and courage in his commitments - for example, in reaction to the "events" in Algeria. His reflection in the "Parole et Mission" team, led by Antonin-Marcel Henry, o.p. then his teaching at the Institut supérieur catéchétique, co-founded with François Coudreau, p.s.s. confirmed and developed the theological vocation of P.-A. Liégé, who began to establish the basic principles of what was to become his pastoral theology. Through the fascinating story of this cleric, Gérard Reynal revives a rich and beautiful chapter in the history of the 20th century Church.
