Religion et société en chine ancienne et médiévale
Lagerwey John - Collection Patrimoines - orient
Résumé
--
For the first time, this book tells the story of the emergence of Chinese religion, which was later to boast more adepts than any other religion in the world. Drawing on archaeology, philosophy and literature, the articles assembled here give a global view of Chinese society in its religious and symbolic facets over a period of two thousand years: from the ancient Shang dynasty (1570 B.C.) to the advent of the Sui dynasty in 589 CE. John Lagerwey (EPHE) has assembled the finest French and foreign specialists to renew our understanding of traditional texts (especially in the light of studies of recently discovered tombs) the evolution of sacrificial rites shamanism and practices of self-perfection. Supreme God ('di'), royal ancestors, Heaven, Ultimate Unity ('Taiyi'): the Chinese have constantly invented ideals of unity, as periods of political division and unification went by. Ultimately,"China would probably never have rediscovered the way to unity if it had not been 'conquered' by Buddhism". On the threshold of the 21st century, this religious tradition has not yet said its last word. This book arrives at an opportune moment to invite reflection, when China is knocking on our doors."
