--
Beyond the relativity of things, does an Absolute exist - one on which existence is founded and our consciousness seeks - one that would give meaning to life? How could we reach such an Absolute? How could we identify it? Discuss it? A conception of the Absolute lies at the heart of the thinking of Platonist philosophers of Late Antiquity the questions, aporia, and dilemmas this conception incites were, for them, the object of deep and rich reflection. This selection of studies offers a global view of the problematic of the Absolute, working from precise textual analyses of the works of Plotinus, Syrianus, Proclus and Damascius. It treats the way, the methods and the stages that are likely to lead us to the Absolute, the traces of the Absolute in the human soul which also show the way, the role of science (geometry, metaphysics, politics and rhetoric) in the search for the Absolute and in its transmission. Two texts by two predecessors on the path to the Absolute, Plato and Heraclitus, serve as an introduction to the book a brief study devoted to Boethius serves as a conclusion.
