Résumé

Provides a complete coverage of air pollution from its sources to its health and environmental impacts. Ideal for graduate students, researchers, and air quality professionals. It addresses topics such as atmospheric dispersion, urban air pollution, acid rain, the stratospheric ozone layer, and interactions between climate change and air pollution. This textbook covers the entire spectrum of topics required to completely understand air pollution. It emphasizes the atmospheric processes governing air pollution (emissions, atmospheric dispersion, chemical transformations, deposition on surfaces and ecosystems). Other areas of focus include air pollutant emission control technologies, health and environmental impacts, regulations and public policies, and interactions between climate change and air pollution. Topics are first presented conceptually, and then in terms of their fundamental aspects. Actual case studies are incorporated throughout to illustrate major air pollution phenomena, such as the dispersion of pollutants in the atmosphere, and the development of strategies to reduce urban air pollution, mitigate acid rain, and improve atmospheric visibility. Graduate students, researchers, and air quality professionals will find the full coverage of these important matters to be well suited to their needs.Preface; 1. Brief history of air pollution; 2. Emissions of air pollutants and emission control technologies; 3. Meteorology: general circulation; 4. Air pollution meteorology; 5. Atmospheric radiative transfer and visibility; 6. Atmospheric dispersion; 7. The stratospheric ozone layer; 8. Gaseous pollutants; 9. Atmospheric particles; 10. Clouds and acid rain; 11. Transfer of pollutants between the atmosphere and surfaces; 12. Health effects; 13. Environmental impacts; 14. Climate change and air pollution; 15. Regulations and public policies; Index.Christian Seigneur is a Professor at Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, one of France's premier engineering graduate schools. He has both academic and private-sector experience in the field of air pollution. He was the director of a Research Center on the Atmospheric Environment for nine years. Previously, he was a vice-president at Atmospheric & Environmental Research, Inc. (AER), a research and consulting company, where he led the Air Quality Division located in California. He has published extensively in the scientific literature and has been an expert advisor to the US Environmental Protection Agency and the French Agency for Health and Safety.
