This new and expanded edition of Environmental Microbiology: A Laboratory Manual is intended for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in environmental microbiology, as well as professional microbiologists working with soil and water. The experiments introduce users to the activities of key organisms and the latest instruments and methods used to study them. Experiments are conducted on a wide variety of environmental samples including soil, water, air, sewage effluent, and fomite surfaces. These exercises illustrate both the beneficial effects of environmental microbes, as well as detrimental effects of human pathogens. The experiments differ in terms of degree of sophistication, and the need for advanced equipment, allowing instructors a choice of experiments based on the needs and experience of a particular class.
