Mud & Mudstones
Introduction and overview
Paul E. Potter, J. Barry Maynard, Pedro J. Depetris
Résumé
Mud and mudstone, the most abundant of all sediments and sedimentary rocks, are relevant to many different human activities and disciplines and thus have a widely scattered literature. Our book provides the first elementary overview of mud and mudstone written for a broad spectrum of professionals, teachers and students in geology, petroleum geology and engineering, urban planning and development, paleontology and paleoecology, and architecture and archaeology. Mud and mudstone provide the foundations to master all their aspects and prepares you to dig deeply into the many fascinating questions of their origin, relationships to earth history and practical uses. Key topics include the production of mud, its transport, the important role of bottom oxygen, sites of deposition, burial, provenance, mudstones in basins and an overview of practical uses followed by an appendix and extended glossary.
L'auteur - Paul E. Potter
PAUL EDWIN POTTER. Changing interests over half a century of professional life include the sedimentology of mudstones and sand-stones, sedimentary petrology and basin studies plus geology on two contrasting scales: the continental-wide geology of Latin America and the urban geology of Cincinnati.
L'auteur - J. Barry Maynard
J. BARRY MAYNARD, thirty years of trying to understand the chemistry of metals in the earth's surface environment and how their behavior has changed with time. Work has covered time periods from the Archean (gold-uranium in paleoplacers) to the Neoproterozoic (Mn in black shales) to the Jurassic (lead-zinc deposits in mudstones of Cuba) to the modern (contribution of arsenic in Ordovician shales to local groundwater).
L'auteur - Pedro J. Depetris
PEDRO J. DEPETRIS. Entered research through the mineralogical study of river-transported sediments, has focused on surface geochemistry and riverine carbon biogeochemistry since the early 80's. More recently, work has included the impact of the ENSO on the hydrology of rivers in southern South America, and the study of Patagonia, as a source of the material delivered to the SW Atlantic Ocean.
