Barrio Urbanism
Chicanos, Planning, and American Cities
David R. Diaz - Collection Urban Studies / Planning / Ethnic Studies
Résumé
Chicanas/os make up the largest group of Latinas/os in the United States, and Latinas/os will very shortly constitute the nation's largest minority group. Providing a historical overview of the migration of these populations into Southwestern cities in the United States, Barrio Urbanism looks at the challenges Chicanas/os face in these cities from a planning and urban policy perspective. The book argues that, due to rampant racism at the local and federal levels of government, professional planners and policy makers have historically failed to alleviate problems of poverty and access to regional amenities in neighborhoods with majority Latina/o populations. However, due to the increasing political power of Chicanas/os beginning in the 1970s, urban planners and officials have begun to pay more attention to the planning and development issues facing urban (and increasingly suburban) Latinas/os. Barrio Urbanism focuses on the most pressing contemporary concerns of Latina/o neighborhoods, including environmental degradation, social justice, and land use policy. It concludes with a consideration of the planning issues that lay ahead for Chicanas/os, and more generally Latinas/os, as they become an ever increasing political and cultural force in the United States.
