Résumé

Who has contributed significantly to the field of mathematics? What have been their most important achievements? Which areas in mathematics have benefited from these contributors and their work? Facts On File's new Notable Scientists series meets the need for an authoritative source of information to answer these and other questions concerning developments in science and mathematics.

Featuring an international selection of practitioners whose work has contributed to mathematics and impacted society in lasting ways, A to Z of Mathematicians is a comprehensive biographical collection of 150 male and female specialists, from antiquity to the present. Designed for high school students, researchers, teachers, and general readers, this is an ideal reference to well-known mathematicians and their contemporary counterparts. Each entry provides the subject's full name, birth and death dates, nationality, and field(s) of specialization. The essays focus on the mathematician's work, achievements, struggles within the milieu, and contributions to the field, supplemented with information on family and educational background and specific sources for further investigation. Among the mathematicians included are the following:

  • Rene Descartes (1596-1650) French Geometry, Algebra
  • Leonardo Fibonacci (ca. 1170-ca. 1240) Italian, Arithmetic
  • Kurt Friedrich Godel (1906-1978) Austrian, Logic
  • Sofya Kovalevskaya (1850-1891) Russian Differential Equations, Analysis
  • Emily Noether (1882-1935) German, Algebra
  • Charles Peirce (1839-1914) American Logic, Topology
  • Srinivasa Aiyangar Ramanujan (1887-1920) Indian, Number Theory
  • Bernhard Riemann (1826-1866) German, Complex Analysis

In addition to nearly 50 black-and-white photographs, the collection features four indexes- arranged by field, country of birth, country of scientific activity, and chronologically-as well as a bibliography of print and Internet sources and an extensive index.
