Résumé
This discussion of the ecological geography of the oceans synthesizes locally-focused studies to support a rational partition of the entire surface of the oceans into ecological provinces that are now widely accepted by oceanographers and fisheries scientists. Using information from recent research as well as data and images from earth-orbiting satellites, Ecological Geography of the Sea, Second Edition describes how the pelagic ecosystem everywhere responds to the effects of mesoscale eddies, planetary waves, tides, sea-ice and other oceanographic phenomena.
This second edition, like the first, concentrates on the planktonic ecosystem and the physical oceanographic processes that control seasonal cycles of production and consumption in the surface waters, but the discussion has been expanded to include benthic organisms and also fish and marine mammals.
Written in a manner that is accessible, the book is intended for graduate students in oceanography, marine biology, marine ecology, and other marine sciences, as well as researchers and professional oceanographers.
KEY FEATURES:
- Presents a comprehensive ecological geography of the pelagic ecosystems of the oceans
- Includes analysis of the response of ecosystem structure to characteristic regional oceanographic processes
- Emphasizes the use of data obtained by earth-orbiting satellites in biological oceanography
- Features expanded number of color images to demonstrate key concepts
