The Science of Soccer

John Wesson

210 pages, parution le 07/02/2003

Résumé

Soccer has recently been the focus of worldwide interest, with the World Cup taking place in Korea and Japan. Brazilian artists Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Ronaldinho and Carlos took back their crown from the disappointing, unmotivated French, who had concentrated their efforts into the marketing of their image, and revealed themselves to be unable to play without their leader Zinedine Zidane. Now that the excitement has dropped and that we have come back to everyday life (for those like me who are not on vacation), the publication of John Wesson's popular-science book is a pleasant surprise: in less than 200 very clear and nicely written pages, this retired theoretical physicist describes the mechanical details of the motion of the ball (both from a solid and fluid point of view), and funny probabilistic considerations associated with soccer.

The book mentions that the author played soccer up to his retirement, and is now playing golf, tennis, table tennis and bowls. This promises forthcoming books which will be of great interest.

John Wesson has written here a unique book showing great skill in mathematics and physics, and a perfect knowledge of soccer and of its rules. This book should be read by anybody with a basic scientific background interested in ball games.
