The New Rules of Engagement

Life-work balance and employee commitment

Mike Johnson

192 pages, parution le 01/10/2004

Résumé

How many of your employees care enough about their work, or organisation, to do anything more than the bare minimum? How many would stay if they were offered another job?

Why care? Highly-engaged employees are six times less likely to be planning to leave their employer than the disengaged. How much could you save on recruitment costs by improving engagement? How about the 'discretionary effort' that highly engaged employees put in?

This text argues that there are ways to develop a new psychological contract between employer and employee. Start by recognising that talk of a 'work-life balance' is the wrong way round as far as employees are concerned - they are much more interested in 'life-work balance'.

The advice in this book will:

  • help to convince senior management that employee engagement matters;
  • help to improve your employees' productivity and willingness to try out new ideas and work practices;
  • help to retain key employees; and
  • make it easier to attract a higher calibre of employee.
