The honors class
Hilbert'sproblems and their solvers
Résumé
Mathematicians have recently become the stuff of literature and movies. From the Beautiful Mind of John Nash, whose biography inspired a major motion picture to the movie Good Will Hunting that features a Fields Medalist, the mathematical equivalent of a Nobel Laureate, mathematicians have come to be regarded as heroes and eccentrics in a surreal world of numbers and equations.
In 1900, David Hilbert, perhaps the most respected mathematician of his time, charted the course of the world of 20th century mathematics during an address at the International Congress of Mathematicians. The collection of problems he presented in that address has become a guiding inspiration to many mathematicians; it has formed a blueprint for mathematical research in the 20th century. Those who have succeeded in solving these problems or advancing their solutions form an Honors Class among research mathematicians.
Yandell presents vivid portraits of the people who devoted their lives to meet Hilbert's challenge, and he shows us that mathematicians are as diverse as the rest of us despite their single-minded pursuit. He brings to life the intellectual context in which mathematics thrives, its philosophical motivations that grew out of the logical paradoxes discovered at the end of the 19th century, and its exciting connections to the revolution in physics and other sciences.
With the support of many of the major players in the field, Yandell has written an engaging account of the achievements of the Honors Class, helping us understand and appreciate the world of mathematicians whose contributions are essential to our way of life.
