Résumé

Provides everything you need to create your own driving and racing games!

Start Your Engines is the first hands-on programming guide that shows you how to build and customize driving and racing games. It features the graphics, physics, AI, user interface, collision detection, and 3D techniques used to create this popular genre of games. You'll learn how to set up different types of road conditions, create opponents, set up road hazards, generate weather conditions, manage collisions, create intelligent opponents, design unique terrains, and much more. Presented in a unique step-by-step, hands-on, construction-kit approach, this book will show you how to create games that you can play for hours of enjoyment. You'll develop live-action interactive driving and racing games with a unique three-part approach. In part 1, you'll learn how to build a model for a racing game and then apply the physics to create a simple 2D (flat) game. In part 2, you'll learn how to go from 2D to 3D with the same game concepts, and then use modeling tips and tricks to begin customizing features. In part 3, you'll apply the concepts of 3D driving games as you create an interactive dune buggy race that takes place on the bizarre and treacherous landscape of Mars.

In this book you will learn:

  • The nuts and bolts of creating driving and racing games
  • Tips and techniques from leading 3D game developers to create challenging driving and racing models
  • How to use a customizable driving and racing game engine
  • How to develop games that utilize varying driving conditions and challenging terrains
  • How to create a full-featured dune buggy racing game that takes place on the unique terrain of Mars, with all the physics and AI background presented in an interactive, step-by-step learning format
