Résumé

With the addition of two new co-authors, Biochemistry takes a new direction, as it becomes the first text to fully reflect the revolution that has taken place in biomedical science in the past ten years, culminating in the human genome project. A key focus of the new edition is the unifying features of protein structure and function that have been revealed by the incredible progress in gene sequencing. Such features are highlighted in a way that will help students master the complex and intricate subject matter.

As you know, the development of drugs is one of the most important interfaces between biochemistry and medicine--knowledge of biochemical pathways is key in the development of new drugs. Moreover, the pharmaceutical industry has become a center of controversy of late, and an understanding of drug development is important for understanding health policy and economic issues.

In planning the upcoming Sixth Edition of Biochemistry (publishing in 2006), our authors felt that it was very important to include a chapter on drug development in the book. They wanted students and instructors to have access to this new material as soon as possible, so we have decided to publish this new chapter as a supplement to the Fifth Edition. This drug development chapter explores the science of pharmacology by examining a number of case histories that illustrate drug development-including many of its concepts, methods, and challenges.
